The New York Daily News recently reminded the world about a weird agreement Donald and Ivanka Trump have with each other.
In 1999, during a taping of the Howard Stern Show, Trump told Stern about a promise Ivanka, who at the time was seventeen years old, made her father make to her:
‘I have a deal with her. She’s 17 and doing great — Ivanka. She made me promise, swear to her that I would never date a girl younger than her. So as she grows older, the field is getting very limited.’
As The Daily News pointed out, “The age of consent in New York is 17, so Trump essentially told Ivanka that he wouldn’t violate statutory rape law.”
Stern jokingly responded, “The nerve of her. Now you can’t go out with 16-year-olds.”
At the time, Trump was 53 years old and going through his second divorce. He was also already dating his current wife, Melania, who has been the subject of her own fair share of scandals throughout her husband’s campaign. Melania was 29 when this interview took place, a mere 12 years older than Ivanka.
The recollection of this weird promise comes out at a time when Trump is already being heavily criticized for comments he made about former Miss Universe Alicia Machado. Machado has shared with the world some of the names Trump used to call her, which include “Miss Piggy” and “Miss Housekeeping.” Clinton referred to the derogatory names Trump called Machado during the first presidential debate, and the GOP nominee has been in damage control mode ever since.
Trump has struggled to win support from female voters throughout the election, with the majority preferring — for fairly obvious reasons — Hillary Clinton over him. His performance in Monday’s debate didn’t do his polling numbers any favors. According to NBC, 27 percent of likely women voters thought worse of Trump after the debate. Thirty percent also said that their opinion of Clinton improved.
One female voter, Joan Hume, who voted for Trump in the primaries, said that she is now leaning “more towards Hillary … because of the debate.” Hume added, “There’s a side of him that’s scary to me that I’m seeing more of. I thought maybe he would change when he got the nomination, but he’s getting worse.”
