Late Saturday night, The New York Times released information they gleaned from Donald Trump’s 1995 tax return. The Times suggested that, because of a $916 million tax loss 21 years ago, Trump could have used tax loopholes that benefit the wealthy to avoid paying anything for the next 18 years.

‘Although Mr. Trump’s taxable income in subsequent years is as yet unknown, a $916 million loss in 1995 would have been large enough to wipe out more than $50 million a year in taxable income over 18 years.’

News of the information about Trump’s taxes has spread like wildfire across social media, and a hilarious new hashtag has begun trending on Twitter in response. At the time of this writing, Twitter was reporting over 49,000 people tweeting using the hashtag #LastTimeTrumpPaidTaxes to poke fun at how long it has potentially been since the GOP nominee paid anything in taxes. The release of this information, which is just a small portion of Trump’s full returns, comes shortly after Trump essentially admitted to the world that he doesn’t pay taxes. During the first presidential debate, when Hillary Clinton suggested that Trump has refused to release his tax returns because he hasn’t paid anything in federal income tax, Trump responded by saying that that makes him “smart.”

Trump’s campaign has released a response to the information, which the Times summed up by saying it “neither challenged nor confirmed the $916 million loss.” A portion of that statement can be read below:

‘Mr. Trump is a highly-skilled businessman who has a fiduciary responsibility to his business, his family and his employees to pay no more tax than legally required. That being said, Mr. Trump has paid hundreds of millions of dollars in property taxes, sales and excise taxes, real estate taxes, city taxes, state taxes, employee taxes and federal taxes.’

‘Mr. Trump knows the tax code far better than anyone who has ever run for President and he is the only one that knows how to fix it.’

Donald Trump has been slipping in the polls since the debate. With this new bombshell out there and the election only 36 days away, Trump is going to have his work cut out for him trying to win the support he needs to gain an advantage over Clinton.
