Alleged unregistered sex offender and GOP nominee, Donald Trump, has been trafficking in conspiracy theories since he began his political career. Despite receiving billions in free air time from the media, he has constantly complained that the system is rigged against him. He took things a step further at a rally on Thursday, when he turned to anti-Semitic dog whistles regarding “international bankers.” The worst part is that Trump’s followers actually believe the alleged unregistered sex offender when he says the system is rigged against him.
Trust in government is at an all-time low, and the GOP nominee is not helping. Rather than simply encouraging his supporters to vote, he has called upon them to become poll monitors, and many have taken his advice. It should come as no surprise that these “poll monitors” will be looking for anyone they deem un-American and that they seem to define un-American as non-white.
‘”Trump said to watch your precincts. I’m going to go, for sure,” Steve Webb told the Boston Globe. “I’ll look for . . . well, it’s called racial profiling. Mexicans. Syrians. People who can’t speak American. I’m going to go right up behind them. I’ll do everything legally. I want to see if they are accountable. I’m not going to do anything illegal. I’m going to make them a little bit nervous.”‘
For starters, Mr. Webb, the language is called English. “American” is not a language, but, then again, we probably shouldn’t be surprised that a man who supports an alleged unregistered sex offender for president is so blatantly ignorant.
The borderline fascism doesn’t stop at simple intimidation. No, some of Trump’s supporters have even gone so far as to call for revolution and the assassination of Hillary Clinton.
‘”If she’s in office, I hope we can start a coup. She should be in prison or shot. That’s how I feel about it,” said Dan Bowman. “We’re going to have a revolution and take them out of office if that’s what it takes. There’s going to be a lot of bloodshed. But that’s what it’s going to take. . . . I would do whatever I can for my country.”‘
Now plenty of political movements have some fringe elements that simply refuse to accept defeat, but this is the first time that a major party nominee has openly questioned the legitimacy of our democracy.
‘”It’s one big fix,” said Trump at a recent rally. “This whole election is being rigged.”‘
But to be frankly honest, it isn’t Trump or his current crop of supporters that worry us. It’s what happens after Trump is (hopefully) defeated. The rise of this alleged unregistered sex offender has tapped into the darkest parts of American society. If Trump’s movement is not a fascist movement then, at the very least, it has the potential to evolve into one.
