Not only did Shepard Smith just drop a very personal bombshell on Huffington Post reporters, but he also defended former Fox News Chairman and CEO, Roger Ailes. Smith has rarely spoken of his sexuality during his 20 years with Fox News.
Smith said that his former boss, Roger Ailes, never discouraged him from going public with his sexual orientation, despite rumors to the contrary. Smith said this about Ailes:
“He (Ailes) was as nice as he could be to me. I loved him like a father.”
“I trusted him with my career and with ― I trusted him and trusts were betrayed. People outside this company can’t know [how painful that betrayal was]. This place has its enemies, but inside, it was very personal, and very scarring and horrifying.”
Smith said that scandal-ridden Ailes never made homophobic comments in his presence at any time during his two decades with the network. Ailes was accused of sexual harassment by anchor, Gretchen Carlson in July, and resigned shortly after.
“He treated me with respect, just respect,” he said. “I wasn’t new in the business when I came here ― I’d been doing reporting for 12 years ― but I wasn’t old in it either, and he gave me every opportunity in the world and he never asked anything of me but that we get it right, try to get it right every day. It was a very warm and loving and comfortable place.”
Shepard Smith has always been a fairly respectable news anchor, despite the network he chose to work for. However, now, his judgement comes into question. How could he possibly have such an opposing view of Roger Ailes when so many women have come forward claiming the man was an utter pig?
Did Smith really grow to love Roger Ailes as a father whilst Ailes was committing actively predatory behavior on, pretty much, any woman he came to employ? That he did. The real question is, how could he pretend not to know Fox News’ dirty little secret?
