During the third and final presidential debate of the 2016 election season at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, the presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and alleged unregistered sex offender Donald Trump, were asked whether or not they would appoint Supreme Court candidates who would repeal or uphold the 1973 Roe v Wade decision guaranteeing a woman the right to privacy in medical decisions, including the decision to terminate a pregnancy.
Alleged unregistered sex offender Donald Trump wouldn’t cop to actually wanting Roe v Wade overturned, saying twice that the decision should “go back to the states.” He did finally say that he believed the decision would be overturned under his presidency simply because he would appoint pro-life judges who would “automatically” rule to overturn it.
The moderator, Chris Wallace of Fox News, asked Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton how far she believed the right to have an abortion should go. At what point in a pregnancy, in other words, should the right to obtain an abortion no longer be an option?
Clinton answered expertly about the issue, saying “the kinds of cases that fall at the end of pregnancy are often the most heartbreaking, painful decisions for families to make.” Indeed, only 1.5 percent of all abortions are performed after 21 weeks gestation and are generally performed on women whose health is at risk should they continue the pregnancy. The risk of death for these pregnant women increases significantly the longer they remain pregnant.
Alleged unregistered sex offender Donald Trump tried to respond and paint Hillary Clinton as an evil infant-killer, but came off sounding like a madman.
‘If you go with what Hillary is saying, in the ninth month, you can take the baby and rip the baby out of the womb of the mother just prior to the birth of the baby […] in the ninth month on the final day. And that’s not acceptable.’
The former reality show television star dredged up old myths about late-term abortion and defended restricting women’s constitutional rights to make their own decisions about their bodies by throwing out an image of a bloodied infant with a selfish, heartless mother cackling in the background. It was disgusting.
As she should have, Clinton upbraided the alleged unregistered sex offender for his fear-mongering and exploitation of the important issue and then shut him down with her response.
‘You know, I’ve had the great honor of traveling across the world on behalf of our country. I’ve been to countries where governments either forced women to have abortions, like they used to do in China, or forced women to bear children, like they used to do in Romania. And I can tell you: The government has no business in the decisions that women make with their families in accordance with their faith, with medical advice. And I will stand up for that right.’
