Donald Trump is not your typical Al Smith dinner attendee, and it showed during Thursday night’s speech.
The Albert E. Smith Memorial Foundation dinner is usually a night of levity and fun humor between the two presidential candidates toward the end of an intense rivalry in their campaigns. President Obama made jokes about John McCain’s age that made the Arizona senator laugh, and Mitt Romney joked about the bromance between President Obama and Bill Clinton. It’s usually a great reminder that the candidates are human beings capable of laughter and humility.
Enter alleged unregistered sex offender Donald Trump.
The GOP nominee actually started off well. He made a “self-deprecating” joke about his own humility that even made Secretary Clinton laugh. He even made a really funny joke about the unfairness of the media in their abundant praise of a recent speech by Michelle Obama while they trashed his wife for giving “the same exact speech.” After his first very mild dig at Hillary Clinton, he even gave his political opponent a smile and a nod.
Then, it all started going off the rails.
Alleged unregistered sex offender Donald Trump started wading into deeply insulting waters as he said, at a charity dinner memorializing a Catholic former presidential candidate, the purpose of which is for the Catholic church to raise money for impoverished children, in an event where Cardinal Dolan was in attendance, that Hillary Clinton was “pretending not to hate Catholics” by attending the dinner.
Things got awkward in a hurry, to say the least. Joy Reid, the MSNBC host, attended the event and live-tweeted the awful moment.
The awkward silence in the room, now punctuated by booing. This is really uncomfortable. #AlSmithDinner

The crowd gasped and began loudly booing the alleged unregistered sex offender Donald Trump. He went on, and it only got worse. He began referring to Hillary Clinton as “corrupt,” saying he was surprised that she got her invitation to the dinner unless she learned of it only through “the magic of WikiLeaks.” He slammed her over Haiti, a place where he said she has “taken a number” of villages.
It was mean-spirited and far outside the tone of the event, and the crowd let him know he had made a huge mistake.
