Annie and Ceci Cardelle of Salisbury, North Carolina, managed to punk Eric Trump, son of Republican candidate and known racist Donald Trump, on Friday during a campaign stop, and the internet is going wild for it.
On Friday, Eric Trump (the one that looks like Voldemort) visited North Carolina, along with his wife Lara, in support of his father’s campaign for the presidency in the hotly contested swing state.
The Cardelle sisters decided that they had to attend, although Annie, 23, took some convincing. She told BuzzFeed News:
‘I was against it. I didn’t want to go hear Eric Trump speak, but she [Ceci] really wanted to, so I couldn’t just go without making a little bit of a statement.’
Grabbing an old shirt and a Sharpie marker, Annie wrote “Latina contra Trump” on it and wore it to the rally as a way to protest the Republican nominee’s anti-immigration rhetoric and insults aimed against Latinos.
Annie, of course, was understandably apprehensive — after all, protesters at Trump rallies have been subject to both insult, humiliation, and even physical violence. So the young woman’s fears were well founded. She originally donned a sweater over the shirt, but luckily for her, no one at the rally seemed to speak Spanish or understand that “contra” means “against.”
As Eric Trump was speaking, Annie Cardelle cautiously removed the sweater to reveal the shirt underneath:
‘I thought “contra” was pretty clear, but I guess not.’
After the speech, a reporter asked them if they were going to wait in line for a photo op with Trump. Ceci, 17, told BuzzFeed:
‘They have about four people looking every person up and down before you go and get a picture, so we thought there was no way we could get a photo with them.’
When you protest a Trump rally but no one realizes your shirt says "Latinas AGAINST trump" so they take pics w/ you like you're supporters pic.twitter.com/5ce8SZw5Mh

Again, none of the Trump campaign workers had any knowledge of Spanish, so the sisters were allowed to step in for the photo. Ceci said:
‘I was sort of in disbelief when they actually called us forward. I was like, “This is not happening. There’s no way they don’t see this shirt.”‘
No one at the rally realized my shirt said AGAINST tr*mp… congrats, y'all played yourselves ✌?️✌?️✌?️ pic.twitter.com/qZ3x1ER8j0

The photo below, which the Cardelle sisters posted to social media, shows them with Eric and Lara Trump.
Of what must have been a pretty surreal experience, Ceci said:
‘I couldn’t wrap my brain around it, so I just stood there and smiled. Right after, we ran out and looked at each other and just screamed.
‘We were kind of in disbelief that no one understood this protest. It really goes to show the lack of diversity in their team.’
The tweets went viral online with the help of celebrities like Perez Hilton, who retweeted “BOSS!!!”

Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, who added “amazing” to his retweet, also defended the sisters against Twitter criticism.

Annie Cardelle weighed in as well, telling BuzzFeed:
‘We weren’t protesting the fact that he’s a conservative or a Republican. We were protesting their particular treatment of Hispanics and Latino immigrants in this country.
‘It’s been almost two years of Trump continuously putting down Latinos, making us feel like we don’t belong. So, my whole thing was to go there and say, “I’m Latina and we’re against you because of what you say about our race.”‘
