A man destroyed the Donald Trump Hollywood Walk Of Fame star with a sledgehammer. Fourteen days before the presidential election, a man dressed as a city construction worker and carrying a sledgehammer and a pick-ax went to work on the symbolic star – not the actual Apprentice star himself.
The attack happened at 5:45 a.m. Wednesday morning. In an exclusive report, Hollywood Deadline talked to the alleged vandal Jamie Otis. The man had his crime well-planned. He chose the early morning hour, because that is when the spot is the most deserted.
At most other times of the day, this is a popular tourist destination and a heavily crowded site. Otis also chose a time when there were no members of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in the area.
People tend to ignore city workers, assuming they are just going about their jobs. Only a few passerby’s noticed him at all.
Working right across from where the Jimmy Kimmel Live! is taped, Otis’ plans went awry when he could not remove the star from the ground. So, he just obliterated it with the serious hand tools he brought with him.
Originally, the man planned on totally removing the presidential candidate’s star and auctioning it off in New York in November. Otis intended to give the proceeds to the women who have publicly accused Trump of sexual assault.
So far, 11 women have come forth to accuse the Republican’s presidential candidate of groping and/or kissing them without their permission. Trump told his followers at a rally this week, that the women were lying. Then the GOP candidate said he planned on suing them, after the November 8th election.
But, this is not the first time vandals defaced Trump’s star, since he announced he was running for president in the summer of 2015. During the most memorable incident, vandals spray-painted a reverse swastika on it, in late January.
This past June, someone painted a mute sign on the star, apparently protesting the billionaire’s provocative language and policies. In both acts of vandalism, the Hollywood Historic Trust quickly returned the real estate mogul’s star to its normal state.
Last July, a street artist placed a miniature wall around the star and topped it off with tiny razor wire. The purpose was to protest Trumps plan to “build a wall” on the border between the U.S. and Mexico, should he become president. The trust also removed the wall and returned the star to its original state.
Trump received his honored five-pointed terrazzo and brass star in 2007 for the NBC series. Executive producer of Apprentice Mark Burnett, former Tonight Show host Jay Leno, and Larry King spoke at the star dedication ceremony. The star is located near the Dolby Theatre and across from the Jimmy Kimmel Live! location.
Even though people have presented a signed petition asking for the Chamber of Commerce to remove the Trump star, it remains as ever on Hollywood Boulevard. Like many of the stars, this one stands in silent salute to glories past.
There are 2,500 plus stars on the boulevard, and the Hollywood Historic Trust maintains all of them.
