FBI Director James Comey’s decision to send a letter to Congress informing them of his decision to reopen the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server has been met with controversy. Some, such as Donald Trump and his supporters view it as the bureau’s attempt to fix the mistake they made when they cleared Clinton of any wrongdoing back in July.

‘Hillary and the Dems loved and praised FBI Director Comey just a few days ago. Original evidence was overwhelming, should not have delayed!’

Others have argued that it was a blatant attempt to affect the outcome of the upcoming presidential election. Dianne Feinstein, who serves on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said the letter played right into Trump’s hands.

‘Director Comey’s announcement played right into the political campaign of Donald Trump.’

Members of the Justice Department claim that Comey was advised against sending the letter, but chose to ignore that counsel. Even some Republicans felt that Comey acted inappropriately. Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin echoed the Clinton campaign’s call for increased transparency in regards to the results of the FBI’s investigation.

‘In line with your commitment to be transparent with Congress and the public, I respectfully request that the FBI provide as much information as possible about these new developments without harming the integrity of its ongoing investigation.’

Whether Comey intended to affect the outcome of the election or not is meaningless, because a recent poll shows that his letter is having an impact on the electorate’s opinion of Clinton. The ABC/Washington Post poll was conducted October 25th-28th. This means that only those who were surveyed on the final day of the poll could be asked their thoughts on the FBI’s announcement. Regardless, 34 percent of those surveyed said that Comey’s letter made them less likely to vote for Clinton.

Under different circumstances, Comey’s actions might not have been an issue, since the FBI would have had time to clarify the matter before voting began. But that isn’t the case now. There are less than two weeks until the presidential election and early voting has already begun. Comey’s actions are clearly having an impact on the election for the highest office in the land and that is simply unacceptable.
