Arizona’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio has lost his bid for re-election.
As The Hill reports:
‘Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio (R), a vocal supporter of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, is projected to lose his reelection race in Arizona to Democrat Paul Penzone. The Associated Press has Arpaio down 45 percent to Penzone’s 55 percent.’
Arpaio has served six terms as the Maricopa County, Arizona, sheriff. Although he has long been hated by many, until this election cycle, no force was strong enough to bring him down.
This year, however, saw the now soon to be former sheriff get hit with serious corruption charges over some of his most detested law enforcement behaviors which unfairly targeted immigrants.
The accusations leveled against Arpaio consist of “criminal contempt charges after allegedly violating a judge’s order to halt immigration patrols accused of racial profiling.” He pleaded not guilty, but not before the charges could send his chances at re-election up in flames.
The sheriff has long been accused of implementing what amounts to cruel and unusual practices in his administration of the county’s law enforcement.
Arpaio has also long been a vocal supporter of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, the man looking at a possible surprise win on Election night.
Trump’s buddy Arpaio, however, wasn’t so lucky.
The soon to be former sheriff spoke at the Republican National Convention earlier this year on Trump’s behalf, employing some of his most familiar lines of harsh attack against illegal immigrants. Such lines, of course, touch right on the core of Trump’s most longstanding message which is that he will “save the country” from the impact of illegal immigration.
