Waiting and hoping for Donald Trump to get impeached? Wait a minute…You forgot about Mike Pence, Rachel Maddow sadly reminds us.
On Friday, Rachel Maddow went on the air to remind us that when it comes to anti-gay hate, our president-elect doesn’t even hold a candle to his V.P. Alas, we were so distracted by that huge, smoking Trumpster fire, we barely even noticed Indiana’s GOP governor, Mike Pence…Who is now poised to launch a massive and terrifying assault on LGBT people’s civil and human rights.
As John Oliver once hilariously observed in his Last Week Tonight episode on net neutrality:
‘If you want to do something evil, put it inside something boring. Apple could put the entire text of “Mein Kampf” inside the iTunes user agreement, and you’d just go agree, agree, agree – what? – agree, agree.’
Jawohl, Mein Trumpf. Those of us who’ve taken comfort in Donald Trump’s lack of passion for social issues can abandon all hope now. As for the Supreme Court ruling that made marriage equality the law of the land, forget it, Gov. Mike Pence was way ahead of them.
A verklempt Rachel Maddow explained , “just applying to get married can put you in jail under Mike Pence.”
‘So, ultimately, marriage equality becomes the law of the land everywhere thanks to the Supreme Court, but in Indiana, under Mike Pence, gay couples faced 18 months in prison and $10,000 for applying to get married.’
That’s because back in 2013, Mike Pence signed a bill that makes it a felony to lie on your marriage license application. That sounds harmless enough…Until, Rachel Maddow points out, you see the actual application for a marriage license.
The application for a marriage license in the state of Indiana requires information from the “Male Applicant” and the “Female Applicant.” That means one member of a same-sex couple has to “lie” in order to provide their information.
Oh, and then there are Mike Pence’s other anti-gay policies, Rachel Maddow adds. Like taking away funds for HIV and AIDS programs and giving it to anti-gay “conversion therapy” programs instead.
‘Mike Pence said you should not only take away money from HIV and AIDS programs, he said AIDS funding should be taken away from serving people with HIV and AIDS because instead it should be diverted into government-funded programs designed to cure people from being gay, to try to fix gay people. That’s what the government should spend its money on — not this AIDS stuff.’
“Conversion therapy” programs seek to change a gay person’s sexual orientation and basically amount to torture and abuse. The Human Rights Campaign reports:
‘So-called “conversion therapy,” sometimes known as “reparative therapy,” is a range of dangerous and discredited practices that falsely claim to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. Such practices have been rejected by every mainstream medical and mental health organization for decades, but due to continuing discrimination and societal bias against LGBTQ people, some practitioners continue to conduct conversion therapy. Minors are especially vulnerable, and conversion therapy can lead to depression, anxiety, drug use, homelessness, and suicide.’
Oh, and Mike Pence also opposes the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act bill…Which would result in turning our nation’s hateful, anti-LGBT bullies loose on their victims.
Dear God, no wonder Rachel Maddow’s tearing up. You seriously have to wonder what could possibly make people hate LGBT people so much they want to strip them of their civil and human rights and have them beaten, tortured, and punished because of who they love.
Watch: Rachel Maddow slices and dices Mike Pence’s senselessly cruel and hateful anti-LGBT record.
