Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), incoming Senate Minority Leader said the Democrats are prepared to filibuster President-elect Donald Trump’s Supreme Court candidates if they are not “mainstream.”
Speaking to Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday, Schumer explained:
‘If he doesn’t nominate a mainstream candidate, we’re going to go at him with everything we’ve got … Because this is so, so important.’
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY.) previously suggested the Senate do away with filibusters, following the Democrats high-profile sit-in on the floor of the House this year.
But tensions are high between Senate Republicans and Democrats after Republicans delayed President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland for over a year, Schumer explained on Sunday.
Following Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s death last winter, President Obama nominated Garland to fill the Supreme Court vacancy. Senate Republicans blocked the effort, seemingly hopeful that the election would win them a Republican president who would nominate a conservative judge to the vacant position.
It’s expected that Trump will nominate a conservative Supreme Court nominee following his inauguration in January, but it seems it won’t be without a fight from Senate Democrats who hope for a more moderate judge to fill the vacancy.
Here’s the list of candidates Trump will consider for the Supreme Court:
Keith Blackwell – a justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia.
Charles Canady – a justice of the Supreme Court of Florida.
Neil Gorsuch – a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
