The ACLU has had some pretty choice words for president-elect Trump recently, and none of them have been too supportive. Just a couple days ago, they issued a full-page letter in the NY Times that went completely viral, and now, they have responded to the whole “Hamilton” scandal.
It all started when the vice president-elect went to see “Hamilton” on Broadway Friday night. Mike Pence got a less than gracious welcome when he entered the theater, and as he exited, the cast gathered on stage to send him a direct message.
That message went like this:
“We, sir, are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights. We truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us. All of us.”
Donald Trump called for a public apology from the cast of the play on Saturday, saying that, “the Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!”
The ACLU quickly responded:
Just in case you thought you deserved respect because of the title you now hold, Mr. Trump, you don’t. Americans will never respect you because of the complete and utter lack of morals or class that you have boasted about all of your privileged, and lazy life.
In short, here in America, people have the right to protest things that they find to be appalling. Unfortunately for you, you picked one of the most narrow-minded bigots in the country to share the stage with you, and now, you will pay the ultimate price. You are no longer that untouchable god in American society that you have always aspired to be.
