A fawning media helped transform Donald Trump from a mere novelty into a viable candidate. Now the chickens they’ve hatched have come home to roost.
The New York Post reports an “off-the-record,” closed-door press meeting at Trump tower devolved into a “total disaster” on Monday as the president-elect subjected TV’s top news execs and anchors to a tirade of abuse. One source revealed that nothing seemed out of the ordinary at first.
‘The meeting took place in a big boardroom and there were about 30 or 40 people, including the big news anchors from all the networks.’
These media big wigs naively assumed they’d talk about the usual things, like what kind of access the press would have under Donald Trump’s administration. The answer — loosely translated as “if and when I damned well feel like it” — came like a swift kick in the pants.
‘The meeting was a total disaster. The TV execs and anchors went in there thinking they would be discussing the access they would get to the Trump administration, but instead they got a Trump-style dressing-down.’
Jeff Zucker, the president of CNN Worldwide was Mein Trumpf’s first target:
‘Trump started with [CNN chief] Jeff Zucker and said, “I hate your network, everyone at CNN is a liar and you should be ashamed”‘
Donald Trump then unleashed his withering scorn upon the rest of the room, calling them out as “dishonest” and “deceitful” liars.
‘Trump kept saying, “We’re in a room of liars, the deceitful, dishonest media who got it all wrong.”‘
NBC’s Katy Tur and ABC’s Martha Raddatz were also singled out for Mein Trumpf’s abuse.
‘Trump didn’t say [NBC reporter] Katy Tur by name, but talked about an NBC female correspondent who got it wrong, then he referred to a horrible network correspondent who cried when Hillary lost who hosted a debate — which was Martha Raddatz, who was also in the room.’
This comes on top of the many other indignities Donald Trump has heaped upon the press, including:
- A scant three days after the election, he refused access to the press during his trip from New York to Washington, D.C. to meet with President Barack Obama.
- Last week the president-elect broke with custom and ditched his press pool — after his spokeswoman Hope Hicks told them he was done for the night — to go out for dinner with his family.
- Throughout Donald Trump’s entire campaign, these so-called heavy-hitters from the major news outlets allowed Donald Trump to confine them in a small “press pen” during his rallies.
- Few in the mainstream media stood up for POLITICO, Buzzfeed, The Daily Beast, or Univision when Donald Trump blacklisted them…Apparently, they were afraid they’d lose access too.
- And then, there’s the president-elect’s ongoing Twitter war with the New York Times, one of the few major news outlets that has challenged him in any meaningful way.
I cancelled today's meeting with the failing @nytimes when the terms and conditions of the meeting were changed at the last moment. Not nice

Now, the major news outlets lament Donald Trump’s lack of respect for the First Amendment, and the way he constantly restricts access to the press. But what did they think would happen? Without a huge boost from the media, Donald Trump never could have won the GOP nomination during the primaries, let alone the general election.
Back in March, Donald Trump bragged about the $2 billion worth of free media coverage he got. And sure enough, Donald Trump got way more attention from the press than any of the other front-runners.

During the general election, the media disgraced itself by giving far more negative coverage to Hillary Clinton and her emails than they did to Donald Trump, his Trump University scam, his bankruptcies and the workers he’s stiffed, the illegal immigrant workers he employed (including his own wife) and all those harassment and rape accusations. Not to mention Trump’s ties to Russia and all those other scandals.

But instead of doing some serious soul-searching, the mainstream media blames “fake news” and “click-bait” for the monster they’ve created. Since the early days of Donald Trump’s candidacy, he has subjected the major news outlets to a series of ever-escalating series of obedience tests. At some point, you’d think the media would rather lose their highly-conditional access to Donald Trump — and the clicks, page views, and eyeballs he attracts — than keep jumping through hoops for him. But even now, these people still don’t seem get it.
