A longtime advocate of environmental protection and immediate solutions for climate change, Hollywood powerhouse actor Leonardo DiCaprio met with President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday. The meeting closely follows Trump’s recent appointment of Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency.
Pruitt is the attorney general for Oklahoma and favors the fossil fuel industry, raising concerns that he would be biased in his position in the EPA. Pruitt is known for heading legal battles against recent climate change policies, making him an incredibly inappropriate choice for the position. Earlier this year, Pruitt published an op-ed in the National Review, stating that the “debate [on climate change] is far from settled.”
Although Trump recently admitted that “there is some connectivity” between global warming and human endeavors after claiming it was a “hoax,” his appointment of Pruitt leads many to believe that this promise to dismantle the EPA during his campaign was not an idle threat.
According to the Associated Press, DiCaprio and Terry Tamminen, CEO of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, met with Trump on Wednesday to present their own proposal — a program that would both create millions of jobs and work to reduce global warming. After all, Trump also promised to create jobs rebuilding America’s outdated infrastructure.
Tamminen confirmed the meeting at Trump Tower, stating that the two presented their solutions to the president-elect, his daughter Ivanka, and other members of the Trump team. Tamminen told AP:
‘Today, we presented the President-elect and his advisors with a framework — which LDF developed in consultation with leading voices in the fields of economics and environmentalism — that details how to unleash a major economic revival across the United States that is centered on investments in sustainable infrastructure.
‘Our conversation focused on how to create millions of secure, American jobs in the construction and operation of commercial and residential clean, renewable energy generation.’
DiCaprio has met with Ivanka Trump in the past, presenting her with a copy of his film, Before the Flood, that features the dangers of climate change.
According to AP reports, the meeting lasted about an hour and a half, and Trump was presented with a copy of the film, which he promised to watch.
Tamminen, former secretary of the California EPA under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, said that Trump wanted to meet up again in January to discuss the program further. Tamminen said:
‘We look forward to continuing the conversation with the incoming administration as we work to stop the dangerous march of climate change, while putting millions of people to work at the same time.’
