Hosts of The View Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar crushed the Republicans for their attempt to obliterate the ethics panel in the dark of the night in a closed-door meeting. It was a dumb move. But as Goldberg says “It’s hard to stand up when you’re spending time on your knees.”

During what was technically part of the holiday break, House Republicans met and voted to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics. It is the only independent ethics guard dog for Congress.

Goldberg talked about the near-president’s promise to “drain the swamp” of Washington corruption:

‘I guess that swamp is stuck.’

Behar responded:

‘First of all, Congressional ethics is an oxymoron. Particularly in this Congress. But it’s sort of like on the slippery slope towards a dictatorship, you know. “First, we’re going to be very secretive about what we do. We’re going to police ourselves. You’re not going to know what bad things we’re doing. We’re going to keep it very quiet.” It’s very scary.’

Goldberg said that Donald Trump came out hard against Congress’ closed meeting in a tweet:

‘With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it may be, their number one act and priority. Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance!’

Then Behar commented on Trump’s tweet:

‘So, it’s just about priorities, it’s not that he cares about ethics of it.’

Then Sunny Hoskins jumped into the discussion saying that the women should give Trump credit:

‘Because this Office of Congressional Ethics was created after all these things happened. You had a string of really serious ethical issues and now the Republicans are saying, “We’re going to get rid of that. We’re just going to use the House Ethics Committee and we’re just going to police ourselves. Which means we’re going to get an A every time.” It’s like, if you made me grade myself, I get an A every time.’

Then Jedediah Bila said Republicans were the ones always calling for an “independent investigation” as far as Hillary Clinton’s emails went. But now that the light has shone into their affairs, they are not as happy.

Behar said Republicans just do not care if they appear hypocritical:

‘You know, Jedediah, when you’re shameless there’s nothing you can do about it. They are shameless.’

Hoskins was disappointed that House Speaker Paul Ryan caved. At first Ryan was against the change, then he gave in to the Republicans. Goldberg agreed:

‘He doesn’t know whether he’s coming or going. On Monday he’s like, “No! No! No!” And on Tuesday he’s like, “‘OK, OK, OK.”’

Behar was disappointed with Ryan:

‘He should know better. The rest of them are a bunch of idiots, but he should know better.’

Well said, Behar. Well said.
