Donald Trump has finally dug himself a hole that he can’t dig himself back out of.
In typical Trump fashion, he felt compelled to share his opinions and took to Twitter Saturday to slam Rep. John Lewis. The highly insensitive Trump must have forgotten how revered and respected Lewis is with Congress, and the move has landed him in some deep trouble.
Trump’s tweets followed Lewis’ interview with NBC’s Meet the Press where he explained he had concerns over the election legitimacy, and would try to exercise forgiveness in working with Trump and his administration.
Trump’s tweets belittled the work that Lewis has done for Georgia and America, claiming he was “all talk”.
Following this, Trump has lost the support of more Americans, and more Democrats have come forward committing to boycott his inauguration. While we didn’t have high hopes for his promise to bring America together in his election victory speech, this feud polarizes American politics to an even greater extent.
John Lewis is not the only representative to have issues with the impending Trump presidency. Many lawmakers had previously acknowledged distaste for the incoming POTUS. Now however, the list of Democratic representatives who are taking a public stance against Trump, is growing rapidly.
Rep. Luis Gutierrez (IL) tweeted a few days before the “Lewis bashing”:
‘…I will not be at Trump inauguration & will march w/women on 1/21.’

Rep. Katherine Clark (MA) tweeted Saturday:
‘@repjohnlewis is an American hero who was willing to sacrifice his life for our democracy.’

Rep. Mark Takano (CA) also shared his support of Lewis, using Trump’s words against him:
‘”All talk, no action.” I stand with @repjohnlewis and I will not be attending the inauguration.’
“All talk, no action.”

Meanwhile, Rep. Barbara Lee (CA) had a very strong message for President-Elect Trump and all Republicans in the House:
‘We already know Donald Trump lashes out when his ego is bruised, but attacking @repjohnlewis during MLK memorial weekend is a new low…@HouseGOP has a choice: stand with @repjohnlewis on the side of history, or hide behind Donald Trump’s thin-skinned ignorance.’
— Rep. Barbara Lee (@RepBarbaraLee) January 14, 2017
These Democrats should be applauded for their conviction, as they are clearly willing to prioritize doing what is right over doing what is easy.
