Former Pennsylvania Senator and presidential candidate Rick Santorum appeared on a CNN panel on Monday during a discussion about President-elect Trump’s recent Twitter rampage against John Lewis (D-GA) after the congressman and Civil Rights hero told an interviewer that he did not see Trump as a “legitimate president.”

The legitimacy of Trump’s Twitter claims were first to come into question. Conservative CNN contributor Kayleigh McEnany supported Trump’s claims, citing a report that listed Atlanta, Georgia 14th out of 20 cities with high crime rates. PolitiFact determined Trump’s claims to be “Mostly False,” saying:

‘Trump is exaggerating when he says Georgia’s 5th is “falling apart” by some metrics and, by others, he’s flat-out wrong.’

The topic moved to whether or not Trump responded to Rep. Lewis in the proper format. While political commentator and former presidential advisor David Gergen said he felt that Lewis was wrong using the format of a nationally televised interview to make his statements, but that the president also has a responsibility to “honor the spirit” of men like Lewis, and that the week of MLK Day is “the week to do that.”

CNN commentator and former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter was much more kind toward Lewis’ views, but Rick Santorum disagreed with him.

‘Would I have done it differently? Yes. Would everyone I know in politics have done in differently? Yes. But Donald Trump’s the president because he did things like this.’

While at least Santorum is finally admitting that Trump’s ignorance, bullying, and dog-whistle racist rhetoric is what Trump’s supporters felt they could get behind, Nutter was having none of the dismissiveness, telling Santorum that Trump doesn’t “get a pass” just because he won. Santorum snapped back, “John Lewis doesn’t get a pass, either!”

The two ended up in a heated debate, which other CNN panelists jumping in. For the full segment, see video below:
