Throughout President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign, he spent much of his time ripping the Obama administration calling Obama “very stupid” and “incompetent” especially when it came to the fight against ISIS. He promised he’d come in and replace everyone with the best of the best and wipe out ISIS easily.
According to CBS News, however, 50 top officials in the Obama administration were asked by Trump to stay on until replacements are picked.
The officials who have been asked to stay aren’t just any old officials. Philly.com reported:
‘The officials include the highest-ranking career officials at key national security agencies such as the Pentagon and State Department…’
Furthermore, Secretary of State Thomas Shannon has also been asked to stay on until Trump’s pick for Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, is confirmed by the Senate.
Several other officials were also asked to stay, and funny enough, most of them were in positions that dealt with terrorism.
‘Some of the officials who have been asked to stick around are Robert Work, the deputy secretary of defense; Chuck Rosenberg, the acting administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration; Nick Rasmussen, the National Counterterrorism Center Director; Thomas Shannon, under secretary of state for political affairs; Susan Coppedge; ambassador-at-large to monitor and combat trafficking in persons; Brett McGurk, special presidential envoy for the Global Coalition to Fight the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL); and Adam Szubin, acting under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence at the Treasury Department.’
Trump used terrorism and ISIS as his main campaign talking point. He promised his supporters from day one he’d be doing a much better job at fighting terrorism. Yet, day one will be handled by the Obama administration picks, who were picked by an “incompetent” and “very stupid” man. Irony at its finest.
Vice President-elect Mike Pence spoke during a press conference saying the move was to “ensure the continuity of government.” He then tried to say their job was to be ready by day one, and that America could be confident they would be ready.
If the officials who were asked to stay on decided to refuse, what would happen if the US was attacked by ISIS? The Trump administration would not be ready by day one if it weren’t for the graciousness of the previous administration’s officials staying on after being insulted by the incoming President.
