A massive crowd of resisters protesting the GOP retreat in Philadelphia and newly elected Donald Trump gathered outside the hotel where the event was held. They organized a Queer Rage(r): Guerrilla Dance Party with people chanting: “Shame! Shame! Shame!”

LGBTQ activists spent Wednesday night demonstrating and dancing. Katherine Heilman-Slavin told WPVI, a local ABC affiliate:

‘Who says you can’t party and also protest at the same time?’

Organizer Hanako Franz spoke to WPVI:

‘The focus for tonight is to call attention to the ways in which queer and trans, especially queer and trans black and brown people, do not have a lot of healthcare.’

The GOP scheduled its congressional leaders’ annual retreat at the Loews Hotel in Center City, Pennsylvania. Trump’s executive order to repeal the Affordable Care Act [ACA], more commonly called Obamacare topped the agenda.

Ted Passon of West Philadelphia said:

‘It’s just like every single day you look at the news and you’re like, “Oh my God! We’re only on like Day 5.”‘

Another protester Jane Wang of Fairmount said:

‘We’re not scared for ourselves, but a lot of people aren’t as fortunate, and they’re just as important.’

Starting early Thursday morning, security became much tighter. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said:

‘You’ll see some significant police presence out there.’

True to his word, Ross had barricades in place with a contingent of officers on both foot and bike patrol outside of the hotel. He continued:

‘There will be some people out there that you just may not see, or that you may not notice.’

One of the protesters told WPVI:

‘We’re sort of facing some really negative stuff, so having a really positive kind of protest, that makes me happy.’

An anti-Trump protester quipped:

‘I’ve seen better cabinets at Ikea.’

The resistance in the city of brotherly love is among the earliest protests spun off after the initial Women’s March on Washington, D.C. Protesters have begun showing up at their legislators’ offices, and Republicans can be assured of crowds at every upcoming political event.
