It’s been reported that Donald Trump is prepared to sign his executive order that will institute a near-total ban on immigrants and refugees from seven majority-Muslim countries.
According to an interview that was conducted with ABC News, Trump said that the ban will focus on countries that have a problem with terrorism.
‘We’re talking about — no it’s not the Muslim ban. But it’s countries that have tremendous terror. It’s countries that we’re going to be spelling out in a little while in the same speech. And it’s countries that people are going to come in and cause us tremendous problems. Our country has enough problems without allowing people to come in who, in many cases or in some cases, are looking to do tremendous destruction’
However, Trump’s ban is a bit of an odd one if his sole concern is terrorism. After all, the ban does not include any of the countries that were the homes of the 9/11 hijackers. Surely, if you’re concerned about banning immigrants from nations that have a problem with terrorism, you’d focus on the countries that hosted the 9/11 hijackers.
There is one other interesting detail about Trump’s immigration ban; it does not include any nations that the Trump Organization does business with.
That would explain why Saudi Arabia, which was the home to several of the 911 hijackers and Osama Bin Laden, is not on this list. It’s rather odd that Trump, who is allegedly concerned about fighting terrorism, is operating a development project in Saudi Arabia. After all, the country is a dictatorship that is financially supporting Wahhabism, which is the ideology that Al-Qaeda and ISIS subscribe to.
To be clear, we think Trump’s proposed Muslim ban is cowardly, unconstitutional and rooted in xenophobia, but we also think it’s hypocritical. The list of countries excluded from thisban makes it clear that Trump is more concerned about his wallet than protecting America’s interests.
His Muslim ban is just red meat for his xenophobic base at the expense of innocent people’s lives. We’d wonder if any of his supporters are concerned over his blatant hypocrisy, but they’ve already proven themselves immune to facts.
