Hollywood legend Robert De Niro was never shy in hiding his utter disdain for Donald Trump before he became president, so it’s unsurprising to see that hasn’t changed since he took over the Oval Office two weeks ago.

Before the 2016 election, De Niro actually admitted that he’d love to punch Trump in the face and honestly, that was probably one of the nicer things he’s said about our new commander-in-chief.

De Niro was one of the first public figures to blatantly attack Trump, in fact, while filming political testimony for the non-partisan group called #VoteYourFuture. Although the video was meant to encourage Americans to get out and vote, De Niro had a difficult time holding back his contempt for Trump, and the video shows him calling Trump “blatantly stupid,” before going on to say “he’s a punk, he’s a dog, he’s a pig, a con, a bullsh*t artists, a mutt” and an “embarrassment to this country.”

So on Friday, when he appeared on The View to promote his new film The Comedian, co-host Joy Behar asked De Niro if he had truly meant his previous threat about punching our now-president smack dab in the kisser.

His response?

‘Of course I want to punch him in the face!’

De Niro explained to the ladies of The View that he said that “because he said that about somebody, that he would like to punch them in the face. How dare he say that to the crowd? How dare he say the things he does?”

De Niro went on to elaborate, saying:

‘It was only a symbolic thing anyway, it’s not like I was gonna go find him and punch him in the face. But he’s gotta hear it. You know, that’s what he makes people feel that way. It’s not good to start that stuff up…’

The acclaimed actor went on to point out — as many others have — that the president of the United States is, in fact, a bully:

‘But at the same time, sometimes when people are bullies like that, that’s what you have to do to shut them up — bully them back.’

He told The View that he ultimately cares about the future of America, and based on what he said about the president, it’s clear he doesn’t believe our country’s future should include him.

De Niro protested alongside fellow celebrities outside of New York City’s Trump Tower on the eve of Trump’s inauguration.
