On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security released orders to do a sweep, which was an additional part of Donald Trump’s original immigration ban. The new plan is to increase the immigration enforcement, which places the 11 million undocumented immigrants at risk for being deported. The message gives instruction to all officials, including Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), to apprehend the individuals and deport every immigrant that is undocumented as fast as possible.
The notes demand any undocumented immigrant that is caught trying to enter the United States to be placed in holding until their individual arguments are resolved, allows local police to enforce immigration, calls for the hiring 10,000 additional immigration officials, and authorizes preparation for the border wall between Mexico and the United States.
The notes’ priority is to target undocumented immigrants who have been charged with committing a crime but it is also made clear that any undocumented immigrant that ICE officials come across should be detained and potentially deported.
One of the notes to officials read:
‘Department personnel have full authority to arrest or apprehend an alien whom an immigration officers has probable cause to believe is in violation of the immigration laws. They also have full authority to initiate removal proceedings against any alien who is subject to removal under any provision of the (Immigration and Nationality Act).’
An agent of Homeland Security who spoke to reporters on Tuesday mentioned that the protective measures put into place by President Obama in 2012 in regards to children who were brought to the U.S. will be honored as long as they do not disobey the laws of the program that were put into place. The agent disclosed that he was not allowed to speak of the specific details of said notes.
There are more than 750,000 undocumented immigrants who fall under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA). The notes also include instructions to assist in keeping undocumented immigrants from crossing the southwest border wall and successfully entering into the U.S. It instructs that every individual caught is to be arrested and held until further notice.
The majority of undocumented immigrants are processed by immigration official before being released and order to appear in court for their hearing. The notes gave instructions that the catch and release practice was to end and there are to be new jails built along the southwest border to hold immigrants who are being detained.
The new instructions in the notes give Customs officials the ability to send some straight back to Mexico whether they are originally from there or not. In previous times people who were from Mexico and Canada would be deported directly back to their homes. While the people of Canada and Mexico were sent home, individuals from other countries had to be held in confinement until arrangements for them to be flown to their home country could be made. There was no mention of if our troops of the National Guard would be used in implementing security for the southwest border, but that does not mean that it will not happen.
