In true coward fashion, Donald Trump has declined the chance to face the people he bullies almost daily. He will not be attending this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. He tweeted:
I will not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner this year. Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 25, 2017
The formal dinner raises money for journalism scholarships and happens every spring. The last president who didn’t go was Ronald Reagan in 1981, but not without good reason. Former President Reagan was recovering from the gunshot wound he suffered as the result of John Hinckley, Jr. having tried to assassinate Reagan.
As per usual, Trump has offered no explanation as to why he won’t be doing what those before him have done for decades. However, actor Zach Braff has a solution for Trump’s replace — one many people will enjoy much more more: Alec Baldwin.

Braff isn’t the only person who thinks that a Baldwin appearance at the dinner is a good idea. Others have weighed in, too, even using the news of Trump’s absence as a chance to poke fun at him:

Yuge opening for Alec Baldwin to get some extra work that evening… https://t.co/cQoERmmLf6

‘The media is an incredibly important part of a vibrant republic, and we celebrate that at that dinner. It’s up to him to decide whether or not he wants to come. But the correspondents’ association and the members who work in this room every day will continue to do our job and write the news and tell the truth about this administration, as we have done about every administration before.’
Members of the press continue to make it very clear that they will not back down from Trump and he can take his ball and go home all he wants. Good for them.
