White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has so far shown that he has no qualms about lying for the president. What he said to Fox News’ Jeanine Pirro on Sunday, however, absolutely wins the golden award for gaslighting an entire country.
Since Thursday, the news media has focused on the ban placed on longtime legitimate news media outlets like CNN, BBC, and The New York Times from presidential press briefings. Trump spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference earlier on Thursday morning about vowed to “do something” about what he endlessly refers to as “fake news,” which is generally just stories with which he disagrees or stories that cast him in an unfavorable light.
They “did something,” alright. They banned outlets who refused to hold back the truth to spare the president’s reputation and possibly even his tenure in office.
Spicer has insisted since then that the “pool” of press reporters was simply expanded to allow for new media outlets to participate, outlets like the very pro-Trump Breitbart and Gateway Pundit. One reporter at the press briefing in which those banned outlets were absent noted that there was still “plenty of room,” but Spicer kept pushing that expansion excuse.
Appearing on Fox News on Sunday morning and speaking to Jeanine Pirro, Spicer slightly altered the excuse but in a huge, significant way.
‘Any assertion that they were banned or whatever is completely ridiculous.’
That’s right. No one was banned. That was a figment of your imagination. The mainstream news media just made that up. It never happened.
Spicer, who has had a full 48 hours since the ban to respond to the outrage of the American public, tried telling Pirro that the pool rotates between the four types of news media: print, online, television, and radio. It rotates every day and the banned outlets, who were not banned at all, were simply rotated out.
He also insisted that the White House was being “punished” for trying to “help the media” to get the “story straight” when Reince Priebus asked the FBI to issue the statement the White House was telling them to issue regarding Trump staffers’ contact with Russian operative during the 2016 presidential election.
