Without offering any evidence whatsoever, Donald Trump went on a Twitter rampage on Saturday morning, claiming that President Obama illegally wiretapped his phones in Trump Tower during the 2016 presidential campaigns.

The best guess anyone can muster as the source of Trump’s claims is an article from the alt-right online “news” site, Breitbart, because we have a president now who calls The New York Times “fake news” but believes everything written on Breitbart and spoken on Fox News.

Unlike the good old days when Trump was just a loudmouthed joke who traveled across the country spreading racist birtherism to the ignorant Tea Party masses, it now matters that he tell the truth. Baseless accusations against the former president, especially accusations of criminal wrongdoing, should not be taken lightly.

This time, it isn’t just liberal Democrats saying so. Even GOP Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) has had enough of these insane rants full of falsehoods.

‘The President today made some very serious allegations, and the informed citizens that a republic requires deserve more information. We are in the midst of a civilization-warping crisis of public trust, and the President’s allegations today demand the thorough and dispassionate attention of serious patriots. A quest for the full truth, rather than knee-jerk partisanship, must be our guide if we are going to rebuild civic trust and health.’

Trump has diligently worked to erode the public’s trust in their news media, calling such long-time respected news publications like The Washington Post and CNN “fake news” while spewing a daily stream of lies to the American public. The new president does not appear to enjoy having his lies exposed, so it has become more important to him than ever to convince voters that they can trust only him to tell them the truth.

As the Trump administration collapses under the weight of the ongoing Russian collusion scandal, it is apparent that he will work even harder to convince the public that every negative story is just a scheme to undermine him.

Who better to point to as the ringleader of that scheme than the former president his supporters so detested for the color of his skin?
