Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) is quickly losing patience with the FBI.
Last week, on March 8, Graham, along with Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island), sent a letter to FBI director James Comey, asking him to “provide us copies of any warrant applications and court orders … related to wiretaps of President Trump, the Trump Campaign, or Trump Tower.”
Graham and Whitehouse also explained in their letter that, despite Trump’s request for intelligence committees to investigate the situation, it is the responsibility of the judiciary committee to look into information regarding warrants for wiretaps.
‘The President’s request was for the intelligence committees to look into this, but it is the Department of Justice’s criminal division that obtains warrants for wiretaps, and oversight of the criminal division lies with the Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism.’
Almost a week later, Comey has still not responded to the Senators, and Graham is getting frustrated, to say the least.
On Tuesday, CBS’s Alan He tweeted a transcript of comments from Graham about what he’ll do if he does not get an answer from Comey soon. Graham first said that, during a hearing tomorrow, he’ll announce his next steps regarding his desire to get to the bottom of Trump’s accusations against President Obama.
The Senator also said about the FBI:
‘They’re about to screw up big time if they keep running to the Intel Committee and not answer that letter.’
Graham went on to explain that the Senate Judiciary Committee has “jurisdiction over the FBI” and that a “joint select committee” would come next if Comey doesn’t respond to his requests.
‘We have jurisdiction over the FBI…All things legal come through the judiciary committee. If they don’t honor this request and give us an answer then I would say that we need a joint select committee because regular order is not working.’
The transcript of Graham’s comments, tweeted by He, can be seen below:

Business Insider reached out to Senator Graham’s office for a comment. Graham’s communications director, Kevin Bishop, explained that the senator has been “pushing for a Select Committee from the start to investigate all issues related to Russia.”
Bishop also reiterated Graham’s earlier message when he added:
‘The Judiciary Committee generally has oversight of the FBI. The Intel Committee does not … We sent a letter to the FBI with Sen. Whitehouse and are awaiting their response.’
The FBI was also contacted by Business Insider, but declined to comment, except to say that they “provide any response to congressional letters to the lawmakers.”
It looks like we’ll all just have to wait until tomorrow for Senator Graham’s big announcement.
