Have you ever heard of the Streisand Effect? Named after Barbara Streisand’s attempts to hide her Malibu home, it means that whenever those in power attempt censor or hide information, they inevitably only draw more attention to whatever they are trying to hide.

Well, Vladamir Putin may soon experience that firsthand. The intelligence community’s ongoing investigation into Donald Trump’s ties to Russia do not bode well for Trump or his alleged supporters within the Kremlin. The FBI has confirmed that they are investigating whether or not any members of Trump’s campaign had contact with Russia during the election.

Putin, like Trump himself, appears to be upset over the ongoing leaks that have occurred in recent weeks. Trump has taken to Twitter to condemn the FBI for failing to stop the leaks from occurring.

While Trump has, so far at least, contented himself to ranting on Twitter, but Putin has taken things a step farther. According to a statement issued on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website, the Kremlin has demanded that the U.S. stop the flow of these leaks or they will start leaking secrets of their own including ones that would harm the reputation of President Obama.

‘Also, I would like to say that if the practice of leaking information that concerns not just the United States but also Russia, which has become a tradition in Washington in the past few years, continues, there will come a day when the media will publish leaks about the things that Washington asked us to keep secret, for example, things that happened during President Obama’s terms in office. Believe me, this could be very interesting information.

Our American colleagues must decide if they respect the diplomatic procedure, if they keep their word on the arrangements made between us, primarily arrangements made at their own request, or we create a few very nice surprises for each other.’

We can’t confirm whether Russia’s threat is an empty one or not, but the fact that the Kremlin is issuing such threats at all, is highly disturbing. As mentioned above, it is the Streisand effect applied to international politics. All this threat does is make us more concerned about Trump’s potential ties to Russia. After all, if there were nothing there then why would the Russian government be so worried?
