If you haven’t noticed throughout the past few years of tumultuous stories, sensational headlines, and “fake news,” very often it seems a plot twist is thrown at the media in an attempt to distract from the larger picture.
CNN’s Don Lemon isn’t having it, though. He said as much when he addressed the revelation that Susan Rice, the National Security Adviser under former President Obama, was behind the unmasking of several individuals of the Trump transition team.
Lemon reminded his viewers that President Donald Trump accused President Obama with no evidence of wiretapping him during the election.
‘It has been one month since the President of the United States falsely tweeted that former President Barack Obama wiretapped him. One month later, the White House and the president are still trying to make a lie true, and they are using the president’s Twitter account, the White House press briefing podium, and right wing media to do it.’
He’s referring to the fact the president is continuously tweeting unhinged remarks about the story. Also, Press Secretary Sean Spicer chided the media for their lack of interest in the story. Fox News has also latched on to the story like a spider to a trapped fly.
He went through a list of attempts on the part of the Trump White House to give credence to his accusations.
‘Today, it’s a claim that President Obama’s National Security Adviser Susan Rice unmasked the names of Trump associates… and last week it was a debunked talking point that former Obama administration official, Evelyn Farkas, admitted spying on the Trump team. She did no such thing. The week before that it was Representative Devin Nunes’ clumsy effort to give the president cover for wiretapping claims. The president said he was vindicated by Nunes. He was not.’
That’s when he laid out the glaringly obvious absence of actual evidence to support Trump’s claims, even if he is trying to distract the American people from the bigger picture.
‘Let’s be very clear about this. There is no evidence whatsoever that the Trump team surveilled or was spied on illegally. There is no evidence that backs up the president’s original claim.’
He addressed his viewers directly and said he would not insult their intelligence by fueling that already wildly out of control story.
‘On this program tonight, we will not insult your intelligence by pretending otherwise, nor will we aid and abet the people who are trying to misinform you, the American people, by creating a diversion.’
Lemon’s remarks are a reminder to the American people that we must remain vigilant and not allow ourselves to be caught up by the “shiny key” stories that will divert our attention from what really matters – whether the president of the United States and/or his staff colluded with Russians to sway the 2016 election and ensure his victory.
