Ever since President Trump was inaugurated in January, many Americans have expressed frustration over the expense that comes with protecting the first family. With Trump and his children seeming to head off on vacations — including expensive international trips — nearly every week and Melania and Barron Trump safely tucked away in Trump Tower — to the tune of $308,000 — it makes sense that people are not pleased with the way their taxes are being spent.
Those who were upset before are going to get a lot angrier once they learn exactly how much has been spent to protect Trump and his family since the first of the year.
CBS News recently reviewed the Secret Service expense reports from January 1 until now and found that the international hotel and car rental costs for the agents who protect Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. have surpassed $190,000.
That’s a pretty hefty sum, although it should be noted that the $190,000 does not include airfare or salaries for the agents.
Just this last week, $11,261 was spent to cover the hotel costs for Eric Trump’s Secret Service agents during a trip to Dublin.
Eric Trump has made a number of international trips so far this year — his most recent visit to the United Kingdom is the fifth. He has also visited Uruguay, the Dominican Republic, Dubai, and Vancouver, Canada. Donald Jr. accompanied him on the trips to Dubai and Vancouver.
When the eldest Trump sons take these trips, they are granted protection that is paid for by taxpayers. However, they are not doing anything that benefits the people paying the salaries of their protectors. The Trumps are busy promoting their father’s businesses, a fact that has outraged Elijah Cummings, a Rep. from Maryland.
Speaking about the Trump sons travels, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee said:
‘The Trump family’s frequent travel to international destinations purely to promote the Trump family business is burning through taxpayer dollars at an unprecedented rate and stretching the Secret Service increasingly thin.’
The President’s sons are not the only ones racking up bills for the American people to pay, though. Donald Trump himself has cost taxpayers an inordinate amount of money with his frequent trips on Air Force One to his Mar-a-Lago resort. The airfare for each of these trips amounts to approximately $700,000, and CBS estimates that each trip costs a grand total of $3 million.
One of the most outrageous expenses that CBS discovered while scouring the reports was a whopping $35,185 on golf cart rentals for the Secret Service agents who protect the president. That’s right, more money is being spent of golf carts for the Secret Service than some Americans make in a year.
Not surprisingly, the Trump Organization has, thus far, refused to comment on the outrageous expenses. However, with those numbers out there for the world to see, it’s only a matter of time before the President and his kids are forced to be accountable for their lavish spending habits.
