Many Americans have long thought that President Donald Trump has some form of mental illness. A group of more than 30 psychiatry experts got together at a conference at Yale University and came to a conclusion that confirms most people’s suspicions and worst fears about Trump. The psychiatry experts state that President Trump has a “dangerous mental illness” and that he is not fit to run the country because his mental wellbeing poses a threat to the American people.
Dr. John Gartner, Johns Hopkins University Medical School psychotherapist believes that they have an ethical responsibility to warn American’s about Donald Trump’s mental state as it directly affects them. He went on to explain:
‘Worse than just being a liar or a narcissist, in addition he is paranoid, delusional and grandiose thinking and he proved that to the country the first day he was President. If Donald Trump really believes he had the largest crowd size in history, that’s delusional.’
James Gilligan, a psychiatrist at New York University who has extensive experience dealing with mentally unstable criminals said:
‘I’ve worked with some of the most dangerous people our society produces, directing mental health programmes in prisons. I’ve worked with murderers and rapists. I can recognise dangerousness from a mile away. You don’t have to be an expert on dangerousness or spend fifty years studying it like I have in order to know how dangerous this man is.’
Inevitably the comments from the doctor’s and the conference itself have been shrouded in controversy. The conference and the statements from various doctors have caused a lot of people to be concerned about the possibility that the Goldwater Rule, a metal ethics rule that bars doctors from putting a diagnosis on a public figure they have not examined themselves. The organizers of the conference insist that all the proper rules and guidelines were followed, and countered claims that the Goldwater Rule was breached by claiming that the rule cannot be used to silence discussion of scientific findings as critics would hope it would.
Trump’s increasingly erratic behavior and seeming inability to distinguish between delusion and reality is a very disturbing sign. In addition to being morally and professionally unqualified to hold the role of President, he may be mentally unfit as well – and if he is, we need to invoke the 25th Amendment before he can do any more damage to this great nation.
Dr. Bandy Lee, the assistant clinical professor in the Yale Department of Psychiatry, noted that America’s are clearly catching on themselves as to the state of the Presidents mental health, saying:
“As some prominent psychiatrists have noted, Trump’s mental health is the elephant in the room. I think the public is really starting to catch on and widely talk about this now.”
Dr. Gartner believed so heavily that Donald Trump is dangerous to America that he started a petition online earlier this year, requesting that Trump be removed from office. The petition claims that he is “psychologically incapable of competently discharging the duties of President.” So far the petition has gathered over 41,000 signatures.
