Samantha Bee’s Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner television special, the unbothered response by the media that Donald Trump wouldn’t be attending this year’s Correspondents’ Dinner, Trump feeding his ego by having a campaign-style rally full of media bashing in Pennsylvania, and more are sure to make White House Correspondents’ Dinner 2017 one to remember. Nevertheless, the show went on and just as one would expect, those slated to grace the stage to give speeches, didn’t hold back.

Reuters’, Jeff Mason, President of the White House Correspondents’ Association gave a soul-stirring speech in which he blasted Trump’s attempts to silence the media and violate their First Amendment rights. He also displayed paramount collegial solidarity by defending peers against Trump’s claims of “fake news.”

Rebutting Trump’s constant claims that the media is public enemy number one, Mason highlighted the work of the press to maintain positive relationship with an administration that repeatedly undermines the media. As part of his emotional speech, Mason argued:

‘We have worked very hard to build a constructive relationship with his press team, and there are clear dividends from those efforts. The press is still in the White House briefing room and we are still on Air Force One. In fact, press access under President Trump has been very good.’

Mason doesn’t live in fairy tale land, though. Quite aware of the struggles he and his peers have faced, he called attention to the regular bullying members of the press have had to endure:

‘We cannot ignore the rhetoric that has been employed by the President about who we are and what we do. Freedom of the press is a building block of our democracy. Undermining that by seeking to delegitimize journalists is dangerous to a healthy republic. It is our job to report on facts and to hold leaders accountable. That is who we are. We are not fake news. We are not failing news organizations. And we are not the enemy of the American people.’

Jeff Mason’s full speech may be found here, but he wasn’t the only one to hold Trump’s feet to the flames. Daily Show funny man, Hasan Minhaj wasn’t as cordial as Mason; he ripped Trump. Among other things, Minhaj said Trump is the “liar-in-chief.” In full context, he called Trump the “elephant that’s not in the room” and argued:

We are living in the golden age of lying. Now is the time to be a liar, and Donald Trump is liar-in-chief.’

Minhaj also joked that Trump wasn’t present at the dinner because he “can’t take a joke.” Minhaj also used his platform to make a political statement, he went after Fox News and their highly charged often bigoted rhetoric. However, like a true comedian, Minhaj did so with humor saying:

‘As a Muslim, I like to watch Fox News for the same reason I like to play Call of Duty. Sometimes I like to turn my brain off and watch strangers insult my family and heritage.’

Minhaj’s most powerful statement, was the comparison he made between how the media has been treated under the Trump administration and how non-whites are treated every day in America. Using the example of someone within the press corps screwing up, then all of them being blamed, he seriously joked:

‘And now you know what it feels liketo be a minority.’
