President Donald Trump seriously has no idea what he’s doing.
The latest incident of this quality being put on full display is so egregious that it made Bernie Sanders crack up laughing live on national television.
The issue at hand is the GOP healthcare bill. On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed an Obamacare repeal bill. If the Senate passes this bill as well and it becomes law, somewhere around ten million people will lose their health coverage in just one year in the name of cutting costs for insurance companies.
Based on some of Trump’s latest remarks, however, it doesn’t even seem as though he’s malicious in pushing this bill.
He’s just an idiot.
Speaking Thursday night at an event aboard the USS Intrepid, Trump, who was seated next to Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, praised Turnbull’s country’s healthcare system as better than that of the United States. The catch to this praise, however, is that Australia has universal health care, and while politicians like Bernie Sanders have clamored for such a thing for a long time, the United States does not have universal health care.
Not only does the United States not currently have a universal health care system, the plan that Trump himself is helping push through Congress moves the United States even further away from such a system, making insurance companies’ profits the center of attention.
Speaking of Trumpcare, the President said:
‘It could get maybe even better; it’s a very good bill right now. The premiums are going to come down; deductibles are going to come down. It’s going to be fantastic healthcare. Right now, Obamacare is failing; we have a failing healthcare system.’
What Trump never seems to entertain is the idea to fix the supposedly failing ACA instead of just sending it up in smoke.
Going on to address PM Turnbull, Trump said: “I shouldn’t say this to the great gentleman, my friend from Australia, because they have better health care than we do.”
Bernie Sanders’s response to this, given while appearing on MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes,” speaks for itself.
Laughing, Sanders said:
‘The President has just said it! That’s great! Let’s take a look at the Australian health care system. And let’s move… Thank you, Mr. President! Let us move to a Medicare-for-all system that does what every other major country on earth does… thank you, Mr. President, we’ll quote you on the floor of the Senate.’
