On Friday, Will Ferrell delivered the commencement address at the University of Southern California, and he couldn’t help but work in a joke about the 45th president of the United States.
Before serenading the university’s graduating class with Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” Ferrell announced to the audience that this was not his first commencement speech.
‘Although this is my first commencement address I have delivered to an actual university, this is not my first commencement speech.’
He then went on to name a number of for-profit schools, including the now-defunct Trump University.
‘The institutions to which I have spoken previously include Bryman’s School of Nursing, DeVry Techincal School, Debbie Dootson’s School of Trucking, University of Phoenix, Hollywood DJ Academy, and Trump University. I’m still waiting to get paid from Trump University. In fact, it turns out I owe Trump University money for the honor to speak at Trump University.’
Trump University, an unlicensed and unregulated “school” that was forced to shut down in 2010, offered a series of shockingly expensive seminars meant to teach people how to achieve the same level of real estate success as Donald Trump. Costs of the program ranged from $1,495 for a three-day workshop all the way up to $35,000 for a “Gold Elite” program.
The president has faced multiple lawsuits from former “students” saying that they were misled by Trump University’s advertisements.
Trump spent years repeatedly refusing to settle the two class action lawsuits that were brought against him over the program. However, in March of this year, he finally agreed to a $25 million settlement.
It might still be a sore spot for him, but at this point, Trump University is the least of the president’s problems, and he’s lucky Ferrell didn’t make a joke about any of the other controversies he’s currently dealing with.
We all know how well the president handles jokes, though, so it won’t be at all surprising if he tweets about how unfunny Ferrell is in the next few days.
