What in the world has been going on with airlines lately? It would seem that another incident can be added to the ever growing list of clashes between airline staff and passengers. In the newest airline scandal, JetBlue chose to remove a family of four from their flight. The reason they were removed might be the most outrageous yet.
A family of four on their way to celebrate a birthday in Vegas purchased a birthday cake to bring with them on their trip as carry on luggage. They stowed the cake in the overhead compartment and took their seats, preparing for the flight ahead of them.
According to Cameron Burke, a member of the family in question, a flight attendant asked him politely to remove the cake from that specific compartment, so he moved it as asked to a different compartment. The he was asked to move it to the seat in front of him, which he complied with. Burke said a different flight attendant then accused him of “being non-compliant.”
According to Burke, who had recorded a segment of the incident, two officials investigated the incident and determined at the end that Burke did nothing wrong. This did not stop the family from being booted from their flight.
The airline disputed Burke’s account of the incident, claiming the family had originally placed their cake in an overhead bin that was intended for “safety and emergency equipment,” and when refused to take it out even after multiple requests to do so.
Doug McGraw, a spokesman for the airline stated:
‘The customers became agitated, cursed and yelled at the crew, and made false accusations about a crewmember’s fitness to fly.
‘After the customers refused to speak with a team leader about the situation, the Port Authority Police Department was called and the entire aircraft deplaned. The Captain determined the customers’ behavior demonstrated a risk for additional escalation in air and would not be allowed to fly.’
According to McGraw the video that is currently circulating the internet does not depict the way the entire incident played out, and Burke only started recording after he had displayed objectionable behaviors, and after law enforcement had already been called.
