Presidential adviser Steve Bannon’s old baby, Breitbart, ran a story this Sunday detailing allegations that Sweden faces major lapses in public funding because of its so called “open borders” policy. Of course, Breitbart readers came out en masse in the story’s comment section to show, yet again, just how racist they really are.

The original Breitbart story quotes Annika Wallenskog, who is apparently the chief economist at the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, as saying: “Demographic trends show that, with more children and more elderly people, the need for local government services is expected to grow significantly faster than the tax base.”

According to Breitbart’s translation of the originally Swedish interview with Wallenskog in question, the economist blames the population growth specifically on the country’s relatively loose immigration policies.

The Scandinavian country did impose some border controls last year, but those unsurprisingly aren’t mentioned in the Breitbart article. After all, although far right conservatives like to accuse liberals of some sort of selective reasoning by citing examples of other countries in their arguments for things like universal healthcare, the far right routinely does the same thing in the case of Sweden.

Sweden, because of its loose immigration policies, has regularly found itself the target of far right individuals seeking to make the case against immigrants in the United States. These arguments, however, have often been quite faulty, to say the least.

For example, Fox News once hosted a supposed Swedish counterterrorism expert who was literally not known by anyone of any importance in Sweden. Additionally, President Trump himself cited a supposedly loose immigration policies-fueled incident in Sweden that literally never happened. That citation came in one of Donald Trump’s first rally addresses as president.

None of these lies, however, stopped Breitbart readers from seizing on the publication’s story to make an array of hideously racist comments of which they apparently aren’t at all ashamed. In the story’s Twitter comments section, a significant number of individuals found it absolutely nothing to completely dehumanize those refugees who have found their new home in Sweden.

One commenter appears to reference Trump’s citation of an incident in Sweden that literally never happened, meaning, of course, that his propaganda plan worked.

Breitbart readers expressed similarly alarming racist sentiments in the Facebook comments section.

The top comment on the publication’s Facebook post literally refers to those migrants who have found a new home in Sweden as “cockroaches.”

Making this comment even worse is the fact that, judging off the number of likes that this comment has, hundreds of people agree with this description of migrants.
