The scandal over Hillary Clinton’s emails seems like it was so long ago, after all the ruckus that President Trump has made in the past months. Of course, people remember Former FBI Director James Comey dropping the charges against her.
During the 2016 presidential primary season, the FBI received a document with Russian intelligence describing a understanding between the Department of Justice and the Hillary Clinton campaign, on whether Hillary had compromised classified intelligence through the use of her private email server. The document makes mention of how former Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch assured a member of the Clinton campaign that the email investigation would not press too firmly into the matter. However, the document has played a huge role in James Comey’s decision to end the investigation, without department of justice involvement.
According to the Washington Post, the FBI the document was bad intelligence, and may have even been fake, sent to confuse the FBI. The individuals mentioned in the document have insisted to the FBI that they do not know one another, and have never had any conversations.
The document referred to an email written by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz to Leonard Bernardo, of the Open Society Foundations. However the document did not contain a copy of the email.
On July 5, 2016, James Comey said this about dropping the charges against Hillary Clinton:
‘Although there is evidence of potential violations of the statutes regarding the handling of classified information, our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case, that no charges are appropriate in this case.’
He went on to say:
‘Although we did not find clear evidence that Secretary Clinton or her colleagues intended to violate laws governing the handling of classified information, there is evidence that they were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information.’
James Comey also said this to the Senate Judiciary Committee:
‘The subject is classified, and in an appropriate forum I’d be happy to brief you on it, but I can’t do it in an open hearing.’
This Russian intelligence document is believed to have cost Hillary Clinton the election, giving the Trump campaign the fuel to win.
