A seemingly highly unstable individual killed two people and wounded a third as part of a belligerent anti-Muslim hate crime in Oregon.
The two men who were killed weren’t even the original targets of the crime. Rather, the two victims tried to intervene when the suspect started to harass two young women who appeared to be Muslim, one of whom was wearing a hijab.
The incident took place on a public transit train, so the victims’ capabilities to flee the attacker were limited. The attacker seems to be a 35 year old man named Jeremy Joseph Christian, but Portland police spokespeople wouldn’t actually confirm that Christian was the attacker.
The suspect is currently being held in jail without bond, having been apprehended shortly after getting off the train, while attempting to flee.
As mentioned, descriptions of the situation paint a picture of an attacker who was hardly all there.
Portland police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson said of the attacker: “We don’t know if he’s got mental health issues. We don’t know if he’s under the influence of drugs or alcohol or all of the above.”
The knife-wielding assailant was apparently ranting and raving about a number of unspecified different things before turning his attention onto his victims, both those who he stabbed and those two women who he was harassing. Police have, apparently, been in contact with the two targets of the attacker’s harassment.
The FBI is keeping in touch with local police in order to probe whether or not their involvement is needed, and a number of local entities have spoken out against the incident.
Simpson said that, with the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan having just passed, his department had been in touch with the local Muslim community both before and after the stabbing incident about increased patrols around Muslim sites.
Even the local public transit authority spoke out about the incident, posting a tweet that read: “Every person has a right to live in this country without fear.”

There’s no indication that President Trump will respond to this incident, with him long preferring to stick to responding to the ones that support his agenda, namely, that small number of attacks perpetrated by Muslims.
