Donald Trump loyalists may be fleeing what they perceive to be a sinking ship, but is there any way to predict who will go next? Some believe that the Counselor to the President and reporter of alternative facts, Kellyanne Conway, may be next, and here is why.
Her husband George Conway just decided to withdraw his name from being considered for a position in the Justice Department where he would oversee 1000 employees. In fact, he pulled his name, even though he was reportedly the front-runner for leading the department’s entire Civil Division.
Although he had not been formally nominated, Conway released a statement on Friday saying that he was “profoundly grateful” to the president and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, according to the New York Times:
‘I have reluctantly concluded, however, that, for me and my family, this is not the right time for me to leave the private sector and take on a new role in the federal government.’
Kellyanne Conway has been out of sight for quite some time after some of the news shows, such as MSNBC’s Morning Joe, banned her. However, she came out as one of Trump’s talking heads last week over the president’s troubles when he abandoned the Paris Accord.
Trump has been having difficulty filling positions for two primary reasons. First, he is an extremely difficult boss, and second, people do not want to have their careers tinged by such a negative presidency.
Conway gave no reason for withdrawing his name from the running, but he did not burn any bridges in his statement, the New York Times reported:
‘Kellyanne and I continue to support the President and his Administration, and I look
forward to doing so in whatever way I can from outside the government.’
At this time, Conway is a partner at the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Prior to this consideration, he had been among those considered for the Donald Trump administration’s solicitor general. That position went to Noel Francisco instead.
Kellyanne and George Conway have been commuting from their home in New Jersey, where they have four young children, and Washington, D.C. That started when she took her position in the Trump administration.
