Things just got a lot more serious. Close Trump confidante and Newsmax head Christopher Ruddy has suggested that things really are shaping up how many of us think they are and that Trump is prepared to fire the Special Counsel that’s been appointed to take over the Russia investigation.
Speaking on Monday to journalist Judy Woodruff, Ruddy said: “I think he’s considering perhaps terminating the Special Counsel. I think he’s weighing that option. I think it’s pretty clear by what one of his lawyers said on television recently.”
It’s not immediately clear what comments Ruddy is referring to.
Robert Mueller is the Special Counsel for the Russia scandal, appointed in recent weeks to take everything over by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who took the Russia investigation over following Attorney General Sessions’s recusal.
Ruddy went on in his remarks to Woodruff to say that he thinks that Trump firing Mueller would be unwise but that there is, to him, simultaneously little justification for Mueller to have ever been appointed to the position. Ruddy claims that, in light of, among other things, his assertion that Mueller interviewed with Trump at one point for the job of FBI Director, Mueller can’t do an impartial job of investigating the president’s ties to Russia.
Watch the video of his comments below. It’s worth noting that President Richard Nixon’s firing of the Special Counsel back in the midst of the Watergate Scandal helped jumpstart his impeachment.
