Attorney General Jeff Sessions testified on Tuesday in regards to the ongoing investigation into the Trump administration and Russia. Some segments within his testimony were quite puzzling to those watching.
Although Sessions failed to disclose meetings with Russian government officials during his confirmation hearing, he did not deny ever meeting with Russians during Tuesday’s testimony. Instead, he said that he did not remember ever meeting with Russians.
After months of Trump insisting that no one in his administration ever met with Russian government officials during the campaign, Sessions admitted that he did. He then lied and covered it by saying he hadn’t remembered those meetings before now.
Sessions went on to state that he never colluded with Russians specifically, but also did not out-rightly deny that he had worked with Russia during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. While this is the first clear admission that someone on Trump’s team worked with Russia at that time, Sessions cited his role as a United States senator to explain the meetings.
‘Let me state this clearly: I have never met with or had any conversations with Russians or any foreign officials concerning any … interference with any campaign or election. Further, I have no knowledge of any such conversations by anyone connected to the Trump campaign. I was your colleague in this body for 20 years, and the suggestion that I participated in any collusion or that I was aware of any collusion with the Russian government to hurt this country, which I have served with honor over 35 years, or to undermine the integrity of our democratic process is an appalling and detestable lie.’
Sessions feigned outrage over the whole situation, and attempted to play on the fact that he was a former Senator, yet still could not flat out deny that he met with Russians without reporting it upon being asked. Sessions’ colleagues in the Senate have already heard him lie under oath about three separate meetings with Russian officials, why should they judge him to be so honorable now?
When it comes down to it, Jeff Sessions can talk about honesty all he wants, as he did within his testimony, but his statement was anything but clear.
