Members of the Trump transition team were ordered Thursday to preserve all materials related to the investigations into Russia’s hacking of the 2016 presidential election.
According to a memo that was given to both The New York Times and POLITICO, the lawyer to the transition team Kory Langhofer has informed all transition team members that they are to “preserve any physical and electronic records that may be related in any way to the subject matter of the pending investigations.”
Some of the records include materials related to the Ukraine and Russia, along with select former Trump presidential campaign members such as former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, former foreign policy adviser Carter Page, and former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
A man who was not a formal transition team member or a member of Trump’s presidential campaign, Roger Stone, was also listed in the memo. Stone was an informal advisor to Trump, as well as a longtime friend.
It’s also worth noting that transition team officials were asked to preserve all records or materials related to any overseas trips taken during the campaign.
This memo and the call for preservation of materials comes after Vice President Mike Pence decided to hire outside counsel, in the form of a lawyer, Richard Cullen. Pence’s lawyer will represent him during the ongoing investigation into possible collusion between Trump administration members.
It can be inferred from this order to preserve materials that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation is gaining momentum and expanding. Thursday, it was reported that the investigation started looking deeper into the business dealings of Trump son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner.
President Trump, for his part, has said time and again on his Twitter account that he thinks the entire investigation is a “witch hunt.” If he’s not being purposely obtuse, then he simply has a bad memory. Clearly, he’s completely forgotten about the time he was a failed reality TV star and constantly called for former President Barack Obama to release his birth certificate. Obama later did produce his birth certificate, only for Trump to imply that it was “Fake News.”
