Although public opinion doesn’t necessarily hold official sway in courts of law, it does hold sway over those courts, including through such means as deciding which issues these courts take up.

The results of a new poll asking Americans whether they think that Trump did anything with regards to Russia that was illegal (or unethical) do not spell out good news for the White House.

NPR polled 1,205 adults over the period of June 21 through June 25 and found that over half of Americans believe that Trump himself did something wrong, meaning illegal or unethical, with regards to Russia. According to the poll results, one in four Americans believe that Trump himself did something illegal, while twenty-nine percent, or close to one in three Americans believe that Trump himself did something “unethical.”

Republicans and Democrats differ wildly in the poll results in terms of the respective percentages of each group that believe that the president did something wrong. Most of those who believe that the president did something wrong are either Democrats or Independents, with only nineteen percent of Republicans thinking that the president did something wrong when it comes to his dealings with Russia. Of that nineteen percent, only four percent of Republicans believe that Trump himself did something illegal.

The numbers are similarly split, with only slightly higher percentages across the board on the question of whether or not Trump’s campaign associates did something wrong when it comes to Russia.

Overall, fifty-eight percent of Americans believe, according to this newly released NPR poll that some number of Trump’s campaign associates did something illegal or unethical when it comes to their dealings with Russia. Only twenty-four percent of Republicans think that Trump’s campaign associates did something wrong.

There are, of course, a number of Trump’s campaign associates who have attracted federal scrutiny including former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former foreign policy adviser Carter Page, and even Trump campaign committee chairman-turned-Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The numbers in this latest NPR poll are slightly higher than the ones recorded in the February 2017 version of this same poll, when a total of forty-nine percent of Americans said they believed that the president had done something illegal or unethical with regards to Russia.
