Subverting her belligerent boss yet again, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and former Republican Governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley acknowledged while appearing on CNN this Saturday that Russia did, in fact, hack the DNC and work to change the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.
This issue reared its head while Trump was overseas this week for the G-20 world leaders summit, where he met one-on-one with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During this meeting, American officials say that Trump confronted Putin over his country’s meddling in our electoral process. Russian accounts of the meeting, however, add to that and say that Trump seemed “satisfied” with Putin’s denial of having meddled in United States politics. American officials deny this aspect to the Russian report.
Even though American officials deny that Trump went along with Putin’s denial of having meddled in our elections, it’s not that far fetched to suggest that he did. In a joint press conference held in Warsaw with Polish President Andrzej Duda before heading to Hamburg, Germany, for the G-20 summit, Trump said of the hack of the DNC:
‘I think it was Russia, and I think it could have been other people and other countries. It could have been a lot of people interfered… nobody really knows for sure.’
So, which account of Trump’s meeting with Putin is accurate? Did Trump really confront him about the election meddling, or did he just let the Russian president get away with denying the whole thing?
Nikki Haley appeared on CNN this Saturday to discuss this question.
Host Dana Bash asked her:
‘Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that President Trump “heard and accepts Putin’s very clear statements that Russia did not interfere in the U.S. election.” Is that true?’
Haley responded by first saying that we “need” to look at the “big picture” of the Trump/ Putin meeting, which is, in her view, an important step forward.
Haley went on to say:
‘What he did was bring up right away the election meddling, and he did that for a reason. One, he wanted him to basically look him in the eye [and] let him know that yes, we know you meddled in our elections… this is Russia trying to save face, and they can’t… Everybody knows that Russia meddled in our elections.’
