The few Congressional special elections that have taken place across the country in the months since Trump took office aren’t over yet. The Alabama Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions upon his assumption of the post of U.S. Attorney General still has to be filled by an elected official; (former) Alabama Governor Robert Bentley appointed Luther Strange to serve in Sessions’ place.
One of the candidates to fill Sessions’ old seat has just released a new campaign ad that is disturbing at best. Alabama Congressman Mo Brooks says in his newly released ad that he pledges to filibuster every spending bill that does not include provisions for Trump’s long promised wall along the entire U.S./ Mexico border. The wall has hit completely unsurprising snags in its development on account of the fact that Congresspeople don’t want to set aside the tens of billions of dollars that would be necessary to build the thing.
However, Rep. Brooks says in his ad that he will fight that if he makes it to the Senate.
He begins by saying that “President Trump promised a wall to keep us safe and to protect American jobs for American workers,” adding:
‘Elect me to the Senate, and I’ll fight every spending bill that doesn’t fund that wall. And if I have to filibuster on the Senate floor, I’ll even read the King James Bible until the wall is funded… We’re going to build that wall, or you’ll know the name of every Republican who surrenders to the Democrats to break my filibuster.’
Voters are going to “know the name of every Republican who surrenders to the Democrats”? What is he, a mob leader? That language is dangerously volatile — and that’s besides everything else that he’s saying.
There is little to no tangible reason for Trump’s proposed wall to go up. Illegal border crossing are on the downswing, and the fact remains that rates of crime among immigrant communities are not as high as those among communities of natural born American citizens.
These facts, however, are inconvenient to the narrative pushed by Brooks and other Trump allies. Trump has enabled reality-disconnected lunatics like Brooks to all of a sudden become relevant.
Rep. Brooks, in his capacity as a Congressman, has already proposed a solution to the problem of funding the border wall. Brooks wants money seized during the prosecution of drug lords to go towards border security.
Watch Brooks’ new Senate campaign ad below. He’s running against at least two other GOP candidates, including the incumbent Strange.
