On Tuesday morning, a series of tweets from the “Rogue POTUS Staffer” Twitter account described the White House as being in chaos over the news about Donald Trump Jr. meeting with a Russian lawyer last summer in an attempt to gather dirt on Hillary Clinton. While the jury is still out on whether or not the person behind “Rogue POTUS Staffer” is an actual White House employee, their description of the climate today matches up pretty well with one from NBC White House correspondent Kirsten Welker.
Appearing on an MSNBC panel prior to Tuesday’s White House press briefing, Welker revealed that the White House is currently in “full damage control mode.” Sources say panic is spreading like wildfire among White House staffers as they rush to lawyer up over the Trump Jr email scandal. It has suddenly become very clear that this is the ‘Trump/Russia’ smoking gun that the world has been waiting for.
Welker then went on to explain that the news about Trump Jr. meeting with a Russian lawyer matters so much because President Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and other top officials have all insisted repeatedly that no attempts at collusion were made during the presidential campaign.
‘This complicates the narrative even further that we have heard consistently — from the president, from the vice president, from his top officials on down — saying that no one from his campaign met with or knew about Russia’s efforts to try to intervene in the 2016 race, or tried to collude with them.
‘This is [one of the] highest-level [people] within the president’s inner circle, who essentially released emails today acknowledging that he met with someone who he thought had information that was damaging to Hillary Clinton. And he was told that information came from the Russian government. That is significant.’
Welker also shared excerpts of statements from both Trump Jr.’s attorney, Alan Futerfas, and Mark Corallo, a spokesman for the president’s private attorney.
Futerfas has called the issue “much ado about nothing” and has insisted that Trump Jr. did not do anything wrong when he attended the meeting.
‘In my view, this is much ado about nothing. Don Jr. had no knowledge as to what specific information, if any, would be discussed. The bottom line is that Don Jr. did nothing wrong.’
Meanwhile, Corallo has backed up the claim Trump Jr. himself has made about his father not knowing about and not attending the meeting.
Despite the insistence of those hired to protect the Trumps, Welker argued that the situation still raises “a lot of difficult questions” for the president.
She pointed out that, based on NBC’s records, President Trump was likely at Trump Tower when the meeting took place. While that doesn’t guarantee that he was at the meeting, she still questioned whether or not he was actually aware of his eldest son’s whereabouts at the time.
