President Trump is in Paris this Thursday in observance of France’s National Day, otherwise known as Bastille Day. He was invited to France by the recently elected French President, Emmanuel Macron. Although Macron has clashed with Trump on a number of occasions, he has said that he hopes that having Trump in Paris can be a gesture meaningful enough to keep the Trump Administration “in the circle.” It remains to be seen how successful Macron’s efforts to that end are.
Trump spoke upon arriving in Paris at the U.S. Embassy in France. In a clip of his remarks posted to Twitter, the president touched on the history of cooperation between the French and American armed forces stretching back to World War I.
Did Trump leave this serious topic alone and keep himself from infecting it with conventional Trump style ridiculousness?
Nope.
Among other things, he introduced in his remarks a number of veterans of the American armed forces who served during the invasion of Nazi-occupied France known as D-Day. During his introduction of these men, he said something that is sure to have made all those present cringe.
He said:
‘With us are three American veterans of D-Day. I’ve read so much about D-Day; very brave people who took back the beaches and towns of Normandy 73 years ago. In that courageous battle, these men helped to liberate this continent, and frankly helped to win the war.’
How stupid are you, Trump.
You’ve “read so much about D-Day”? Seriously?
These men who the president is introducing lived that day when thousands upon thousands died on the beaches, and Trump wants everyone to be sure that they know that he “read about it.” How recently did he read about it — last week?
Additionally, he says that the Normandy invasion helped to defeat Nazi Germany as a whole as if it’s some sort of profound connection of events. It’s not. Trump is just an idiot, and even while speaking before a crowd gathered at the U.S. Embassy in France, he couldn’t hide it.
