Republican Representative Jerry Moran of Kansas cannot leap tall building in a single bound, but he did publicly refuse to vote for Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s TrumpCare. By doing so, the senator ensured that TrumpCare would not come to a vote. Then, Moran did something completely amazing.

Standing together with his Republican colleague Senator Mike Lee of Utah, the two senators talked briefly with reporters off camera, in a scrum, about why they decided to join with Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Rand Paul of Kentucky.

Then, Moran took the opportunity to leap across the Senate subway tracks on Capitol Hill:

The Kansas senator has been against the Republicans’s healthcare plan, because it would decimate small hospitals scattered across the Sunflower state. Moran announced he would vote against the repeal-and-replace bill in a show of Kansas courage and honor.

However during the scrum, he told reporters that he supported repeal now, replace later. That seems to place a lot of faith in party leadership that has shown itself to be less than trustworthy:

‘Surrounded by reporters, @JerryMoran jumps subway tracks in DC. He said today he supports repeal now, replace later.’

Moran was critical of McConnell’s bill, which was drafted in secret with the aide of insurance companies and no women, not even Republican women. The Kansas senator was also concerned that the draft dropped protections for people with preexisting conditions.

Three female senators already doomed McConnell’s repeal-then-replace alternative bill. Republican Senators Collins, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia nixed the proposed bill Tuesday.

Moran’s attempt to dodge reporters by jumping the subway tracks failed, because they did catch up with him, after all.
