After the wave of revelations about previously undisclosed contacts between the Trump team and Russia, and after Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley indicated that he intended to bring Donald Trump Jr. before his committee in order to answer for himself, it has now been announced that Trump Jr. and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort will be testifying before Grassley’s committee next Wednesday.
The Senate Judiciary Committee initially had a hearing planned for Wednesday, July 19, but that was postponed until next week, on July 26, in order to compensate for the newest developments in the Russia scandal.
A series of recent New York Times reports revealed that Trump Jr., Manafort, and the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner all met with Kremlin-connected lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya in 2016. Although he didn’t initially admit as much, Trump Jr. agreed to participate in the meeting and brought along Kushner and Manafort with the expectation that they would be receiving dirt on Hillary Clinton from the Russian government.
It’s unclear at this point what, if any, data was passed off to the Trump camp.
Also appearing at next Wednesday’s meeting will be the head of a controversial agency known as Fusion GPS, which has found itself, through its private intelligence and security work, embroiled in the Russia scandal.
