The Trumps aren’t the only ones who can wield Twitter to their advantage. The GOPs struggle to get any version of their health care bill passed has been well-documented and well-publicized, and now Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her husband, President Bill Clinton, has weighed in.
The Senate has been holding rapid fire votes on a whole array of pieces of health legislation, with their latest strategy being, apparently, to just try everything. The “Motion to Proceed” on ObamaCare repeal debate passed recently, with Vice President Mike Pence casting the tie-breaking vote in favor of the debate, and since then everything has gone downhill.
At the time of the Motion to Proceed’s passage, the Senate GOP literally had not tied it to any particular bill. In other words, they didn’t mean it to open debate on one bill alone; they meant it to open debate on anything they could come up with.
As if it needs to be recounted again, the Senate GOP isn’t very good at coming up with decent national health care plans. Senate GOP leadership has, in the days since the MTP was passed, fired off a whole host of various approaches to ObamaCare, ranging from repeal plans that actually come with a replacement to measures that simply slash various provisions of the Affordable Care Act without actually having any plan to prop up the health care system in place of such damaging legislation.
It’s the Senate GOP and other Trump allies’ reckless approach, seeking to simply cut whatever they can, that has led to much of the recent crumbling that the ObamaCare health markets have experienced. The GOP’s refusal to stick to any cohesive, stable plan has left insurers with no choice other than to pull out of the markets.
Motions to Proceed shouldn’t be passed without a plan, and bills that undercut the stability of the nation’s health care markets shouldn’t even be an option.
Former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton weighed in on all of this on Twitter this week, writing:
‘Just in case helpful
@GOP, here’s @Scholastic on How a Bill Becomes a Law: #1 step Draft a Bill (voting comes later)’
